History:

Who was Marshall Rohland?

Marshall Rohland was UW Milwaukee Chemistry professor and a strong chess player with a peak rating above 2000. Although he was never a Wisconsin State Champion he was an important leader of chess on local, state, and national level. He was the USCF president from 1967-1969. He was a huge supporter of early scholastic tournaments in Wisconsin. His support was on all levels of chess organization from finding playing sites, to helping direct scholastic chess tournaments and serving multiple positions for USCF. It is important for us to remember who helped to bring chess to where it is today, especially the people who that led up to the Fischer era.

United States Junior Closed

Chess Championship

Milwaukee, WI

On Monday, July 13th 2009 the United States Junior Closed Championship began with a star studded field that was ready to fight for the crown. The event is an invitational 8 player round robin event, with a Game in 90 minute with 30 seconds increment time control. The first seven spots are given to the highest rated players under the age of 21 in the United States and the 8th spot goes to the winner of the previous year's Junior Open. The event is both USCF and FIDE rated, thus many of the participants will be fighting ferociously to gain FIDE rating points and meet their rating requirements to secure their Grandmaster titles. The Internet Chess Club will relay the moves live. Looking back at previous years this may be one of the strongest Junior Closed Championships ever, with 1 Grandmaster-elect, 3 International Masters, 3 FIDE Masters, 1 Candidate Master, and a 2455 average rating. This event will determine the strongest player under the age of 21 in the United States. Bragging rights are not the only thing on the line, the winner of the event earns a spot into the 2010 United States Championship, and the increased prize fund from previous years:

1st: $1,000

2nd: $500

3rd: $300

In addition each participant receives a $300 appearance fee.

The event is being held at the beautiful, newly renovated, Ramada Milwaukee Conference Center, located at 6331 S 13th Street.

2009 United States Junior Open

Chess Championship

Milwaukee, WI

The event was a resounding success with 158 participants from all over the country competing for the Under 11, Under 15, and Under 21 national titles. The Under 21 section had the added bonus of a $450 first prize and a qualification spot in next year's US Junior Closed Invitational Event (The 2009 US Junior Open kicked off today, watch next post for results). Thank you to Stan Wright for the lovely pictures for the US Junior Open

Results:

The U11 section was won by Milwaukee/Waukesha local Brady Harder with a perfect 5/5. His rating has skyrocketed since his first USCF rating of 1282 in November 2008, to 1604 after the US Junior Open. A 322 point gain in 8 months, not too shabby if you ask me. Brady has been working with local Master and WI State Champion Erik Santarius for the past few months.

The U15 section was taken by new Wisconsin resident Marc Christian Nazario who also went 5/5. On an interesting side note Joel Banawa (Junior Closed Participant) was good childhood friends with Marc in the Philippines. They got to see each other for the first time since Joel moved to the US.

The U21 section was a tight race until the very last round, when the dust cleared Eric Rosen from Illinois and Kevin Bu from Minnesota we tied for first place with 4.5/5. Although the $450 first prize was split equally, the trophy and most importantly the spot in the 2010 Junior Closed was won by Eric Rosen after an Armageddon game.
